It’s a bad start for pork lovers in the Year of the Pig.
Sanquan Food has quarantined its products suspected to be contaminated with swine fever “from all sales channels,” the major Shenzhen-listed frozen food manufacturer said in a statement Monday, and is cooperating with a government-led investigation into its product safety.
The company’s troubles emerged earlier this month, when an animal epidemic prevention team detected swine fever in dumpling samples from companies including Sanquan in Hunan province. A few days later, photos surfaced online of safety-check results in Gansu province that indicated Sanquan’s (and other brands’) products were swine-fever positive.
Sanquan then notified investors that it was aware of media reports, but had not received any formal notifications from “authoritative government departments.”
Monday’s statement is Sanquan’s first public acknowledgement that government inspection teams have contacted the company about the case.
Though swine fever does not affect humans, the disease spreads quickly among pigs and has been haunting Chinese pork businesses for months – and is particularly under scrutiny during China’s Lunar New Year period, when pork is a major festival cuisine ingredient.
