Student Sentenced to Death for Murder
(Beijing) -- Yao Jiaxin, a university student, was sentenced to death on April 22 by a court in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province for the murder of a woman in October 2010.
According to the Intermediate People's Court of Xi'an, Yao, a 21-year-old
student at the Xi'an Conservatory of Music, knocked down cyclist Zhang Miao
while driving his Chevrolet Cruze. Yao stabbed Zhang several times to death
after he stepped out of his car and saw that Zhang was recording his license
plate number. Yao fled in his car after the stabbing and ran into two more
pedestrians within a short distance from the murder, and was soon detained by
authorities.
In a confession to police on April 23 Yao said he
killed Zhang to cover up for the accident, because he believed she would
continue to ask for injury compensation.
