Soft Power and Hard Choices

The United States and China are the 21st century's leading geopolitical powers. No other nation state comes close. The U.S. is still far ahead as a naval power, despite China's launch in 2011 of its first aircraft carrier. More generally, the U.S. military retains its lead in advanced military technology, from remote-controlled drone aircraft to cyber warfare.
