Yi Gang was one of the first Chinese university students allowed to study abroad after the Cultural Revolution, and today he is vice governor of the People's Bank of China as well as director of the State Administration of Foreign Exchange.

Yi graduated from the University of Illinois with a doctorate in economics and later taught at Indiana University. A year after returning to China in 1993, he helped establish Peking University's China Center for Economic Research.
