Retrospective: Madeline Albright on a Shifting Global Landscape

Editor’s note: Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright died Wednesday in Washington at age 84. In 2013, she sat for an interview with Caixin to discuss women leaders, China’s rise and its relationship with the United States. 

As details of a U.S. government surveillance program emerged just before a two-day U.S.-China summit in California, accusations against Chinese hacking appeared to have been banished from the agenda. But questions of mutual trust continue to overshadow a number of issues among leaders of the world's two largest economies. In a recent trip to Beijing, former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright spoke to Caixin about how the U.S. and China can manage frictions going forward while also turning her attention to the substantial headway women have made so far in leadership positions.
