China's box office returns increased 134% week-on-week to 1.05 billion yuan ($151 million) last week, thanks to a 761 million yuan injection from “Venom,” according to Maoyan, one of China's biggest online ticketing platforms.
“Venom” is the first Marvel movie to bring in higher box office revenue in China compared to the U.S., the Beijing News reported.
The film, about a Spider-Man villain, was expected to face restrictions in China due to its violence, but it received a surprising green light from regulators.
