A man who killed 15 people and injured 43 after driving into a crowd in China’s Hunan province in September was sentenced to death Wednesday.
A court in Hengyang city, Hunan, issued the sentence before an audience of over 300 local residents and reporters, according to a statement published on Hengyang’s official court website.
Yang Zanyun had plowed into a crowded square with a Land Rover on Sept. 12, before getting out of the car to attack his victims with a handheld collapsible shovel and a knife.
Yang has six previous convictions for crimes ranging from assaulting a judge in 1992 to causing a forest fire in 2006, all of which resulted in time in jail, according to state news agency Xinhua.
