Chinese regulators are finally approving video games again – and the market is thrilled.
After a nearly 9-month freeze on video-game approvals, Feng Shixin, deputy director of the Ministry of Propaganda’s Publishing Department, said that a “first batch of games” had recently been reviewed for sale in the Chinese market, Caixin has learned.
Shares of Tencent, China’s largest game producer, jumped more than 4% after the news broke Friday, when Feng spoke at the China Game Industry Annual Conference at Haikou, the capital of island province Hainan.
China froze video-game approvals in March, and the country’s gaming giants have felt the effects. In November, NetEase reported that its third-quarter profit had fallen nearly 37%, while Tencent’s gaming revenue fell 4% the same quarter. China is the largest market for video games in the world.
