Sarah McIver, a Canadian teacher who was detained in China for working illegally, has been released and returned to Canada, according to the Canadian newspaper, The Globe and Mail.
McIver had been detained in China as an administrative penalty earlier this month over a work-permit issue related to her teaching job, according to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The news of McIver’s detention initially caused concern among some China watchers who suspected that the case could be connected to two previous arrests of Canadians in China this month.
China arrested a former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor separately on suspicion of endangering China’s national security.
Both China and Canada have said that McIver’s case is different from Kovrig’s and Spavor’s.
