The recovery in Macau’s gaming industry continued in 2018, with a 14% year-on-year increase in casino gambling revenue, new data show.
Gross revenue in the sector was 303 billion patacas ($38 billion) last year, according to the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, Macau’s official gambling watchdog.
December’s 16.6% year-on-year growth was the 29th month in a row of expansion in games of chance in the territory. The healthy numbers come after sharp declines beginning in 2014, amid a government crackdown on corruption and lavish spending.
On the Chinese mainland, the only forms of legal gambling are state-backed welfare and sports lotteries.
