KFC Rival in China Dicos Adds Faux Eggs to Its Menus

Dicos, one of China’s largest fast food chains, has expanded its range of vegan plant-based options on the menu, as major restaurant chains across the country race to bring artificial meat products to local consumers.

Dicos, which borrows heavily from KFC, will replace the conventional egg patty in seven dishes including its breakfast burgers and bagel sandwiches with San Francisco-based startup Eat Just’s egg substitute made from mung beans, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

The plant-based egg product, named Just Egg, will be available in more than 500 Dicos China restaurants in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and the provinces of Liaoning and Shandong, the statement said.

Eat Just entered the Chinese market in 2019 with Just Egg via partnerships with some e-commerce platforms and brick-and-mortar retail stores.

The introduction of Just Egg to Dicos’ menus comes three months after the fast food chain’s 2,600 domestic restaurants added mock chicken burgers supplied by Chinese plant-based food maker Starfield to their menus.

In China, Starbucks, Burger King and KFC have all rolled out dishes made from plant-based alternatives to beef, pork or chicken in what they call a drive to alleviate the environmental burden associated with meat production and diversify ingredients in a contribution towards food security.

Meanwhile, global faux meat makers have been considering moving some of their production lines to China in order to reduce costs. In September last year, U.S. firm Beyond Meat announced that it would build two manufacturing facilities in Jiaxing, East China’s Zhejiang province, which are set to begin full production of plant-based beef, pork and chicken products for the domestic market by early 2021.
