1.China launches crewed spacecraft Shenzhou-12

A Long March 2F rocket carrying the Shenzhou-12 spacecraft was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on Thursday morning. The Chinese manned space launch was declared a success shortly after Shenzhou-12 entered its designated orbit.


2.Four new local Covid-19 positive cases confirmed in Guangdong

China’s southern Guangdong province reported (external source, in Chinese) four new local confirmed Covid-19 cases on Wednesday, all in the capital city of Guangzhou. As of 12 p.m. on June 16, the province has reported a total of 2,657 confirmed cases, with 218 patients currently in hospital.

3.An Air China suspends Johannesburg flight over Covid-19 cases

The Civil Aviation Authority on Wednesday suspended Air China Flight CA868 between Shenzhen and Johannesburg for four weeks with immediate effect. Last Thursday, 32 Covid-19 positive passengers were found on the flight.

4.China to boost oversight of extracurricular education

The Ministry of Education issued a notice Tuesday saying it would draw up standards for the establishment of extracurricular education institutions, including their curriculum, teaching hours, staff qualifications and fees.

5.Guangzhou to lift the lockdown restrictions in 11 areas

The southern Chinese city of Guangzhou lifted lockdowns in 11 areas of five districts as the spread of Covid-19 eases in the city. The areas include both residential neighborhoods and workplaces, which were closed early June after Covid-19 cases were found there or in nearby areas.

6.Box office hits a low during Dragon Boat Festival holiday

The box office during the Dragon Boat Festival holiday last week stood at about 463 million yuan ($72.3 million), a low for the holiday. The industry was expecting this year’s box office to break the 1 billion yuan mark.

7.Government says three-child policy will help alleviate low fertility levels

China’s National Bureau of Statistics (external source, in Chinese) said Wednesday that the implementation of the policy to allow couples to have three children will help ease low fertility levels and improve the age structure of the country’s population.

8.E-commerce livestreamers which sell fake products face decade behind bars

According to the state-owned Legal Daily, livestreamers who promote counterfeit goods could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison (external source, in Chinese). In addition, livestreamers who falsely advertise or defraud consumers will also be liable for civil damages.

9.Death toll in China’s gas explosion rises to 25

The death toll from a gas explosion in Central China’s Hubei province has climbed to 25, local authorities said Monday evening. The explosion occurred in a residential neighborhood of the city of Shiyan on Sunday. Over 100 people were injured.

10.China Covid-19 vaccination reaches more than 900 million doses

China had administered more than 900 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines as of Monday, according to the National Health Commission (external source, in Chinese), with 15.5% of the total population completing the two-shot vaccination.
