Garbage Patch Reappears on Tibetan Plateau, Vaccine Tally Hits 1 Billion, Family Planning Surveys

1.Delta variant arrives in Dongguan

Dongguan, a major manufacturing center in Guangdong province, kicked off citywide Covid-19 testing on Monday after two new cases of the delta coronavirus variant were reported over the weekend. The delta variant is considered highly infectious by experts and was originally discovered in India.

2.Covid-19 vaccination drive hits 1 billion dose milestone

China had administered more than 1 billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines as of Saturday, according to the National Health Commission, going from 900 million doses to 1 billion doses in just five days.

3.Vast garbage patch reappears

A huge garbage patch (external source, in Chinese) covering nearly an acre of a nature reserve has reappeared in in the Hoh Xil region of the Tibetan Plateau. In 2019, media outlet Economic Observer reported on garbage accumulation in the reserve, and it was cleaned up by the local government.

4.CCTV exposes high salary outbound work is a scam

State broadcaster CCTV has exposed (external source, in Chinese) human trafficking gangs which offer people highly paid jobs overseas, but then get victims involved in “fraudulent and illegal activities.” Since 2020, the cops and immigration authorities have broken up more than 450 gangs of human traffickers.

5.China to strengthen marriage counseling

Last Friday, the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National Development and Reform Commission published a plan (external source, in Chinese) that calls for strengthening pre-marriage guidance and health care as well as marriage and family relationship counseling and divorce counseling to reduce marriage and family disputes.

6.Gree CEO said to sell houses to employees at cost

Dong Mingzhu, CEO of the home-appliance maker Gree Electric, said (external source, in Chinese) that the company will sell the homes it provides to some of its employees for them to buy at cost. She said her original plan was to give it to them for free when they retired, but apparently many employees didn’t want to wait so long.

7.Surveying women’s pregnancy plans

Following the recent relaxation on birth restrictions — the so-called “three child policy” — several cities have begun to survey (external source, in Chinese) the childbirth plans of local women of childbearing age, including Shijiazhuang, capital of North China’s Hebei province; Jinhua, Zhejiang province; and Chongqing municipality.

8.Cryptocurrency miners kicked out of Sichuan

As the country’s crackdown on cryptocurrencies continues, Southwest China’s Sichuan province has announced it's going to shut down all cryptocurrency mining projects based there, following the lead of other domestic hubs like Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Yunnan.

9.Ordos Basin’s proven shale oil reserves top 1 billion tons

State-owned oil giant China National Petroleum Corp, announced (external source, in Chinese) Sunday that 550 million tons of shale oil reserves were discovered in the country’s Ordos Basin in the first five months of this year. The basin’s total proven reserves have topped 1 billion tons, making it the country’s largest shale oil field.

10.Jiangsu built the first highway supporting driverless cars in China

Inspections have been completed (external source, in Chinese) on a highway in East China’s Jiangsu province, which has features to accomodate autonomous driving. It is the first of its kind in China.
