Back to April, the death of a 50-year-old trucker named Jin Deqiang caught widespread attention. Jin was fined 2,000 yuan ($305) by local police at a checkpoint in Hebei province, when they found that the transponder in his truck was disconnected. In response, Jin bought pesticide that he used to end his own life.

Jin’s death exposes the harsh and exploitative conditions long faced by long-haul truckers in China. Each day, millions of truckers hit the road, driving tirelessly for hours or even days. But on the other side, the long absence from family life turns into outsiders, especially to their wives and children.
