Shanghai’s neighbors will make 60,000 quarantine rooms available for close contacts and secondary contacts of Covid-19 cases who will be transferred from the metropolis, where quarantine centers are stretched to their limits amid record official case counts.

The financial hub, grappling with its worst outbreak since the pandemic began, has ramped up the supply of quarantine facilities as it seeks to isolate all Covid patients and their close contacts — a requirement under the country’s “zero-Covid” policy. However, there’s still a huge gap between demand and supply, leaving many residents who need quarantine stranded at home or transferred to places in poor condition.
