China’s top education body announced Monday that it has set up a team to investigate textbook illustrations that were criticized as ugly, sexually suggestive or politically questionable.

Related hashtags have been trending on social media. As of Tuesday afternoon, the hashtag #The Ministry of Education will thoroughly investigate the problematic illustrations in the textbooks #教育部将彻查教材插图问题 has racked up more than 600 million views and 90,000 comments on China’s Twitter-like platform Weibo.
