Amazon Seals Deal to Provide Data Tools for Hong Kong Industrial Park

What’s new: Cloud computing behemoth Amazon Web Services (AWS) has sealed a deal to provide some of its datasets and data technology to companies in a Hong Kong industrial park home to more than 1,000 tech firms.

The partnership will allow the U.S. tech giant and Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corp. to create a series of programs that offer qualified local researchers access to pandemic and cancer-related datasets on AWS platforms, according to a joint statement released Monday. The deal will also allow eligible local developers of artificial intelligence (AI) and robots to use an AWS tool designed to simulate technology applications in virtual 3D environments prior to commercialization.

As part of the deal, AWS will also offer training courses to selected local firms engaged in software-as-a-service, biotechnology and AI, according to the statement.

The background: The two companies have been working together since 2014, when AWS started providing local firms with cloud programs and training.

Hong Kong was considered an attractive location to build an AI or big data business because of its role as an international financial hub and well-developed tech ecosystem, the South China Morning Post reported last month, citing a survey by the FinTech Association of Hong Kong.
