China’s national women’s volleyball team caused a stir on Chinese social media after the first set of their Asian Volleyball Confederation Cup match against Iran — not for the quality of their serves or the tenacity of their defense, but for the masks they wore on their faces.

A mob of online posters accused the team’s organizer of putting the athletes at risk of suffocation by allowing them to play Thursday while wearing N95 face masks to protect them from the spread of Covid-19.
