Zhong Shan, China’s former minister of commerce, has been appointed chairman of the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), the country’s top legislature.

The committee, one of more than a dozen that sit under the NPC, carries out research, draws up laws and proposals related to finance and the economy, and helps the NPC and its Standing Committee on matters related to legislation and supervision of those areas. Its tasks include reviewing the annual work reports and draft plans submitted to annual NPC meetings from the Ministry of Finance and the National Development and Reform Commission.
