A prominent Chinese comedy producer was hit with a penalty of nearly 15 million yuan ($2.1 million) and was suspended indefinitely from commercial performances in Beijing for violating relevant regulations, according to a statement released by local cultural authorities Wednesday.

The punishment was imposed in response to accusations on social media that one of the firm’s stand-up comedians insulted the Chinese military in a pun he made during a live comedy show in Beijing on Saturday.
