A man from Central China’s Henan province is demanding tens of millions of yuan in state compensation for being wrongfully convicted of murder and spending more than 22 years behind bars, according to his case application reviewed by Caixin.

Xie Zhehai, 51, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 1996 for the murder of a 22-year-old woman during a failed rape attempt. After he was released from prison on a commuted sentence in 2018, he filed for an appeal. In November 2022, Xie was exonerated based on a lack of evidence.
