There are no shortcuts to membership. It’s only through concrete reform that China can prove that it is capable and willing to meet the high standards of the CPTPP.

China’s latest efforts for joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) have been revealed. At the recent 2023 APEC Business Leaders Forum in China, Deputy Minister Wang Shouwen, the Ministry of Commerce’s representative for international trade negotiations, detailed China’s ongoing efforts to join the trade pact. To date, China has thoroughly examined and evaluated over 2,300 clauses of the CPTPP, delineating the necessary reform measures and legal adjustments required for membership. The Chinese government has also recently submitted a communique to CPTPP members, demonstrating China’s commitment and determination to join.
