President Xi Jinping has called for China’s climate strategy to eventually shift away from focusing on energy consumption and make controlling carbon emissions the top priority.

“China’s ecological development has entered a critical period in which carbon reduction is the key strategic direction,” Xi said Tuesday while chairing a meeting of the Central Commission for Comprehensively Deepening Reform, according to a report by the state-run Xinhua News Agency.
