A disgraced former senior judge at a Shenzhen court accepted some 16 million yuan ($2.2 million) in bribes, mostly from local lawyers, according to a judicial document obtained by Caixin, in a case that has shaken the southern Chinese city’s legal system.

Between 2003 and 2021, as many as 16 lawyers paid bribes to Yao Hui, former head of a division of the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court in charge of hearing criminal cases, according to the document. The corruption scandal also involved a number of local prosecutors and court officials.
