Torrential rains and the flooding they caused in Jilin province have killed at least 14 people since last week including senior municipal officials, adding to the death toll in northern China after the latest round of record-breaking storms moved northeast from Beijing and its surrounding regions.

All of the fatalities were reported in the small city of Shulan, state broadcaster CCTV reported Sunday. They included Luo Xudong, the city’s deputy mayor; Zhou Kunxun, a political commissar of the municipal department responsible for expanding the official military forces and leading the local militia; and Ni Feng, a senior water conservancy engineer, the provincial government said in a statement.
