China has lodged a formal complaint with Japan after its neighbor announced it will start releasing wastewater from a failed nuclear power plant into the sea this week, with a foreign ministry official saying that China will take “necessary measures” if the plan proceeds.

Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong summoned Japanese Ambassador to China Hideo Tarumi on Tuesday and urged Tokyo to change its mind, calling the plan “extremely selfish and irresponsible,” according to a foreign ministry statement.
