(Jakarta, Indonesia) — Were it not for the attendance of Premier Li Qiang and the ongoing Sino-U.S. geopolitical tensions, not many in China would have paid attention to the annual series of East Asian leadership meetings held in tandem with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.

This included the ASEAN-China leaders’ meeting, the ASEAN Plus Three (APT) leadership meeting with China, Japan, and South Korea, and the East Asia Summit (EAS).
