China Calls for Ceasefire as Casualties Mount in Israel-Gaza Conflict

China has called for an immediate ceasefire between Palestinian and Israeli armed groups, after a surprise attack from Hamas on Israel and fierce clashes around the Gaza Strip left at least 1,100 people dead and thousands more wounded.

In a foreign ministry statement Sunday, Beijing reiterated its support for a two-state solution — establishing an independent state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel — calling it the “fundamental way out of the conflict.”
