Early in the morning of Oct. 7, a Saturday in the fall Jewish holiday season, Feng An, a Chinese student studying in Jerusalem, was wakened by air raid sirens.

Like many local residents, though unclear about the source of the attacks, he knew from air raid drills to run to a bomb shelter at his apartment building. Even inside the underground bunker, he said he could feel vibrations from explosions outside and hear fighter jets flying overhead.
