U.S. President Joe Biden has nominated veteran Asia hand Kurt Campbell to be the country’s deputy secretary of state, the White House said, in a move that experts say signifies Washington’s continued strategic focus on China as it seeks to balance competition and cooperation with Beijing.
Campbell, the current coordinator of Indo-Pacific Affairs at the National Security Council (NSC) and deputy assistant to the president, will become the second-in-command in the U.S. State Department if confirmed by the Senate.
