TSMC unveils plans for second wafer fab in Japan
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) is planning to build a second manufacturing plant in Japan through its local subsidiary Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Inc. (JASM), taking its total investment in the country to more than $20 billion, according to a Feb. 6 announcement. Construction of the new fab, to be based in Kumamoto, is set to begin by the end of 2024, with the aim to have it ready for operation by the end of 2027. JASM was established as a joint venture to facilitate TSMC’s inaugural factory in Japan, attracting significant investment from Japanese tech giant Sony Group Corp., automaker Toyota Motor Corp. and auto parts company Denso Corp.
