Inside EV-maker HiPhi’s unraveling

Its founder’s slow response to financial woes and public relations blunders contributed to the apparent downfall of Chinese luxury electric vehicle (EV) brand HiPhi, people familiar with the company told Caixin, with the carmaker temporarily shuttering production and cutting its workforce. The sudden collapse of the premium auto brand, part of Shanghai-based manufacturer Human Horizons Group Inc., came as a surprise to many in China’s auto industry, as Human Horizons founder and CEO Ding Lei was viewed as resourceful due to his background in the public and private sectors.
