China’s sports regulator will stiffen punishments for throwing matches, fixing competitions and other violations of fair play and good sportsmanship, with lifetime bans in the cards for the most egregious offenses.

The General Administration of Sports (GAS) released new rules last week, which will take effect July 1, that toughen penalties on what it calls “competition sportsmanship and competition discipline violations.” Such misconduct includes intentionally harming others, damaging property, and falsifying a competitor’s age, gender or other identity information, according to the measures.
