In January, Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. (吉利汽车) sold over 213,000 cars, surpassing electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD Co. Ltd. (002594.SZ) to become China’s top carmaker by sales. A one-month lead is no guarantee of success for the whole year, but for Geely Auto, which has trailed BYD for the last two years, the result is worth celebrating.

The Hong Kong-listed company is the flagship subsidiary of Chinese auto conglomerate Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. Ltd.
