U.S. ambassador to China: U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has picked former senator and business executive David Perdue to be ambassador to China, he announced on his social media platform Truth Social Thursday. The position bears a heavy responsibility to help mend the frayed relations between China and the U.S. Perdue is “a loyal supporter and friend,” said Trump, who will be “instrumental in implementing my strategy to maintain Peace in the region, and a productive working relationship with China’s leaders.” Perdue, 74, spent time living in Hong Kong during his 40-year career in business. He previously held positions including CEO of discount store chain Dollar General Corp. and sportswear brand Reebok. Perdue was a close ally of Trump while in the U.S. Senate from 2015 to 2021. He will follow current ambassador Nicholas Burns, appointed by President Joe Biden.
