A rundown of the news making headlines in and around China over the past week:

Trump likes TikTok: President-elect Donald Trump has showed further support for TikTok. Speaking in Arizona on Sunday, he said “maybe we gotta keep this sucker around for a little while,” in reference to the short-video app, after claiming to have seen data showing he had received billions of views while campaigning for president. TikTok is currently challenging a law in the U.S. that seeks to ban the app from the country on national security grounds unless its Chinese parent divests by Jan. 19. Trump has emerged as an unlikely backer of TikTok, having initially supported the ban, but confessing he had a “warm spot” in his heart for the app at a recent meeting with its CEO. However, it’s not clear what Trump could do to reverse the ban, as he will be sworn in the day after the deadline. The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear TikTok’s case.
