Duterte’s sudden arrest: Beijing has urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to avoid “politicization or double standards” after former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte was arrested in Manila Tuesday. Duterte was then extradited to the Netherlands, where he will face charges of crimes against humanity related to his government’s crackdown on drugs, which reportedly led to thousands of deaths. Speaking at a regular press conference, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said the ICC should act “prudently in accordance with the law.” During his tenure from 2016 to 2022, the populist president improved the country’s ties with China and Russia, while the relationship with the U.S. — the country’s traditional ally and former colonial ruler — grew more tense.
