China strongly condemned the U.S. military’s forcible removal of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, labeling the action a breach of international law while signaling that Beijing intends to safeguard its economic interests in the South American nation.
Foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Monday that China’s cooperation with Venezuela is based on sovereign equality and protected by law. When asked if China would continue importing Venezuelan crude following President Trump’s declaration that oil wealth was a primary objective of the intervention, Lin affirmed that Beijing’s business ties would persist regardless of political changes in Caracas.
