Chinese authorities are investigating Zhao Xiule, a former banking regulator in the eastern city of Wenzhou, after he turned himself in for suspected corruption.
The probe was announced Friday by anti-graft authorities.
People familiar with the matter told Caixin that Zhao had been taken away by authorities weeks earlier.
Zhao, a longtime figure in Zhejiang’s financial regulatory system, previously headed the Wenzhou branch of the now-defunct China Banking Regulatory Commission and later served as an inspector at its successor before retiring.
