Since April, Chinese export prices have surged, taking the baton from volume as the primary growth engine. This shift has sparked fears: will higher prices price China out of the global market? The short answer is no. Rising prices are a symptom of robust external demand, not a deterrent, and they reveal a profound structural shift in global trade.
In the first quarter of this year, export growth was overwhelmingly driven by volume. Since April, however, the dynamic has flipped. Price increases have widened significantly, with the export price index jumping 7% year-over-year in April and May.
