Super Typhoon Bavi is bearing down on the eastern seaboard of the Chinese mainland, threatening to bring destructive winds, towering waves and torrential rains to a vast stretch of the country already reeling from severe floods.

As of 8 p.m. Wednesday, Bavi was about 1,370 kilometers southeast of Keelung, Taiwan, moving west-northwest at 15 to 20 kilometers per hour. The storm, with a cloud system stretching more than 1,300 kilometers, is expected to hit northern Taiwan on Saturday before approaching Fujian and Zhejiang provinces on the mainland coast and then moving inland.
