A rare and powerful tornado triggered by the remnants of Typhoon Maysak tore through central China’s Hubei province late Monday, killing at least 11 people, leaving one person missing and injuring more than 330 others.

The twister, an unusual weather event for the inland region, carved a destructive path across the Yangtze River, striking the prefecture-level cities of Ezhou and Huanggang. The broader severe weather system, which brought heavy rainfall and thunderstorms to multiple cities from July 6 to 7, affected roughly 14,600 residents, collapsing 22 homes and damaging nearly 5,000 more, local authorities reported Tuesday.
