Chinese Consumers Tighten Purse Strings Despite Modest Income Gains

Chinese households are spending the smallest share of their incomes since the depths of the pandemic, underscoring Beijing’s struggle to revive domestic demand amid a protracted property slump.

While per capita disposable income rose 4.2% year-on-year in real terms in the first half of the year, consumer spending lagged far behind with just a 2.7% increase, according to National Bureau of Statistics data released Wednesday.
