Flood Decimates Private Zoo in Southern China, Leaving Dozens of Animals Missing

A catastrophic flood triggered by Typhoon Maysak has devastated a privately owned zoo in southern China, sweeping away more than 100 animals and leaving the park’s owners with only a three-day supply of feed as they struggle to rebuild.

The flash flood struck the Guigang Zoo in the Guangxi region early on July 6, submerging enclosures under nearly 10 feet of water. The disaster caused an estimated 4 million yuan ($590,000) in damages, killing several animals — including three lions intentionally locked in their cages to protect nearby residents — and displacing nearly 100 others.
