Zhang Xiang, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, said he will step down when his 10-year term ends in July 2028, saying he wants to return to the laboratory and tackle scientific questions with social impact.

In an open letter sent early July 27 to staff, students and alumni, Zhang said the university should embrace new ideas and prepare for a transition to new leadership as artificial intelligence and rapid social change reshape higher education.
