In Depth: Fatal Gene-Editing Experiment Tests China’s Clinical Research Oversight

A 6-year-old Chinese girl died in March 2025 after receiving an experimental gene-editing treatment for a rare neurodevelopmental disorder, a death that wasn’t disclosed in a related paper later published in Nature and is now prompting scrutiny of China’s biomedical-research oversight.

The girl, identified by the pseudonym Mei, died days after receiving a treatment designed to correct a mutation associated with Snijders Blok-Campeau syndrome, a rare condition that can cause developmental delays, language impairment, intellectual disability and low muscle tone.
