22 Missing as China-Bound Cargo Ship Sinks in Bay of Bengal

A Panama-flagged cargo vessel bound for China sank rapidly in the Bay of Bengal, leaving 22 crew members missing after an apparent cargo liquefaction event.

The MV Ocean Winner, loaded with 71,200 tons of iron ore, went down in approximately eight minutes on Aug. 21. Of the 24 crew members aboard — comprising 20 Chinese nationals, three from Myanmar and one Bangladeshi — only two Chinese sailors have been rescued. Search and rescue operations by the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard are ongoing.
