China has appointed veteran financial regulator Liu Guiping as the new head of its top market watchdog, a move that brings a seasoned central banker to the helm of a sprawling agency tasked with overseeing the country’s market order, antitrust enforcement and product safety.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security announced Wednesday that the State Council appointed Liu as the director of the State Administration for Market Regulation. He replaces Luo Wen, who was transferred to serve as the Communist Party chief of Hebei province in July.
