Former Guangxi Political Adviser Gets Suspended Death Sentence for $39 Million in Bribes

A former top political adviser in China’s southern Guangxi region was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for taking more than 263 million yuan ($39.23 million) in bribes over nearly two decades, including in the three months before he was placed under investigation.

The Foshan Intermediate People’s Court in Guangdong province said Tuesday that Peng Xiaochun, 64, exploited a series of official positions from late 2006 through March 2025 to help companies and individuals win construction contracts, obtain disbursements and secure project approvals.
