China’s universities are heading toward a wave of faculty retirements that could add pressure to the country’s public pension system, as the ranks of retired staff at some campuses approach those of current employees.

The issue has drawn fresh attention after an online calculation estimated that Wuhan University’s more than 7,000 retired employees receive a combined 900 million yuan ($134.48 million) in annual pensions. The university hasn’t disclosed such a figure, and the estimate was based on assuming each retiree receives 10,000 yuan a month.
